God: will chasten you as He deems fit…..
Hebrews 12:11 (KJV) “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby”.
When you enter an exercise program for the most part you do it to get your body fit and in tip top shape; to alleviate certain types of ailments which can afflict some of us at times. The training is excruciating, it burns your heart, your lungs, the flesh wants to implode and your skin explode at the strenuousness of the situation; yet after a few weeks, say a couple months that physique starts to look buff and cute.
You start to get complements on the work in progress and it is called such because the attention will cause you to ignore the pain and develop that which has been started.
Such is the word we are reading today: we come to Christ and we have all this extra baggage, for some of us, it’s just plain baggage, and we have grown accustomed to carrying them, but the one thing about them are they are anti-Christ: they must go.
SO when the Spirit of God starts to cut, trim, prune, place you on the winepress and in other words, when He starts to chasten to get rid of the dross it is very painful. Losing that best friend whom He say must go is hard; ceasing from consuming that hard liquor because He sees the liver condition you will attract a little later in life is painful, but it must go. Shacking up with that man or woman because ultimately they will bring you an STD is by gosh going very far in cutting off excesses, but He wants them gone and they must go.
Striking and lighting up that last pack of cigarette might seem like hell, but He said His name is ‘Jealous’ and He doesn’t particularly want to share your body with any lung disease which seeing that He is God He sees it coming some years down the road, so stop now.
The sad case of some of these are we get the warnings, we get the cautionary; He is gracious enough to give us a reason for the physical work out we are getting and many of us get to hating the chastening; we actually rebel against His correction. But the word says, when we endure the chastening we not only help ourselves, but we yield the fruit of righteousness. What it is for the Holy God everlasting to tell us that we are righteous in His sight.
Beloved, the exercise of our flesh and will by God will come as He prepares us to get deeper, achieve more, develop that which He has for us. The best of all is He knows what we can endure when He starts pruning, so when the desire for certain things dry up, don’t fight or go running after it; it is for a reason.
