God: has sent you….
Mark 16:16-18 (KJV) “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover”.
There are a couple “great commissions” in the scriptures and today we will take a look at the one issued in Mark; this is the written word and directives of Christ the Lord, the Supreme Savior of mankind in His appearance and words to those who followed and walked with Him in the period prior to His death.
One issue Jesus had foresight and experience with is the lack of belief in folks He came in contact and also from His divine insight what He knew would be an issue with those who came after Him: disbelief. He made it clear that for whatever reason, if you don’t belief you shall be damned; this is the unadulterated word from Jesus before His transcending to the throne in heaven.
When you get beyond the point of doubting and being saved with the act of baptism, then certain responsibilities rest upon you: appropriation of the name of Jesus to do the “work” which He started while on earth: casting out demons; speak with new tongues in the name of Jesus. These are signs which will follow those that believe and are baptized in His name. The way I see it, no stuttering, no hesitation in the pronouncement, He said it, so it must be so: there exists demons which is among us in the world and we have to deal with them, much as Jesus did, hence His commission to “cast” them out.
The authority which is established by Jesus is the comparison of holding a serpent in your hands and if per chance you happen to drink any deadly thing, it will not have any effect on you; this beloved is power and authority left to us by the Son of God when He was on earth and we see this happening to Paul in the book of Acts.
Another part of the commission is to lay hand on the sick and healing is granted them; you see, it is a commission from Christ, meaning that it is possible, it can be done, the resources are in place to carry out these things; these are signs that MUST follow believers.
To put it another way that will circumvent any doubt in my mind: if Jesus did it whilst He walked the earth, then as a disciple, as a believer and as one called to knowledge of Christ, so must we also. It is part and parcel of the work left for us to accomplish.
In my simplicity, I would not have a polished answer for Jesus when I stand before Him and He asks the question, “Why did you not?” I don’t have an answer and if you are called and not doing these commission, but do have an answer, I wish you would share it.
The Commission: Go….
