How tightly do you hold possessions?

loving God always

God: giveth and He taketh; source of all good things; blessings without measure

Daniel 1:1, 2(KJV) “In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god”.

For most of us life is relational, we need interaction with people to complete the cycle of our lives. We hold unto things and many times those things become of great value to us. We even place them into different categories, which depending on the importance, makes it untouchable to another individual.

At times we those things we hold unto can become idols because of the value we place on them in front of other things. I am blessed with certain gifts and talents as a member of the body of Christ, just as much as you are, but I get to wondering, how much value or importance do I place on the gifts versus the giver of the gifts?

What I am trying to analyze within my mind is if today or tomorrow, something that God has blessed me with is taken away from me, what would be my reaction; would I cast an accusatory eye upon Jesus and cry for my gift to be returned or would I give joy in having that gift for a brief moment and know that tomorrow something better will come along?

I read the scripture where Israel was so much into idolatry and behavior that was contrary to the will of God that He gave them into the hands of their enemies: King Nebuchadnezzar ruler of Babylon. Into his hands was given the majority of people from Judah, and some of the vessels from the temple.

This must have been a blow to lose out on double account not knowing what the future holds. How many of us have been in such a predicament in our lives? Today it is fine and dandy and tomorrow everything is going haywire in our lives, trying to figure out what’s the next move.

This won’t be for everyone, but for those who have gone through this type of testing, I am sure you realized that God meant it all for your good and the end result have moved you into a surer place with your Father.

In moments like this we have to be tried to come true as pure gold. Don’t despise the days of testing.

Trivia: He knew the exact date he was dying and the conditions; who is this?

A friend of mine once told me that he wanted to get rid of all his possessions… and he had more than most of us. The reason he gave for this was that he found possessions to be a “millstone around my neck.” That got me thinking…

Several years later, I too enjoyed to empowering experience of being rid of “things.” My friend was right.

Great food for thought! It’s shocking when we take the time to think about it, how tightly we do hold onto possessions that have long outlived their usefulness, hold onto old ideas rather than allow ourselves to grow and to put our attentions to more important things like loving others, serving the Lord, living the life the Lord planned for us. Thanks for sharing!
